Timeline of Minnesota Voters Alliance v. Mansky
November 1, 2010 - Plaintiffs filed their complaint challenging the
constitutionality of the Minnesota statute 1 day before the 2010
election seeking an immediate court order preventing enforcement of
the statute. The Court denied their motion.
Nov. 18, 2010 - Plaintiffs filed an amended complaint adding an
as-applied challenge.
April 29, 2011 - District Court ruled that the statute was
constitutional on its face and had not been unconstitutionally
applied. The plaintiffs then appealed to the Eighth Circuit.
March 13th, 2013 - Eighth Circuit ruled against the plaintiffs on
the facial challenge, but reversed the district court on its
dismissal of the as-applied challenge and sent that claim back to
the district court for further proceedings.
May 7, 2013 - Plaintiffs asked the Eighth Circuit to reconsider its
ruling en banc and the court rejected the petition.
Oct. 15, 2014 - Minnesota Secretary of State, one of the defendants,
filed a separate motion arguing the case should be dismissed as to
him as well as seeking summary judgment on the as-applied claim. The
district court denied his motions.
March 23, 2015 - District Court dismissed the as-applied challenge
and entered final judgment for the defendants. Plaintiffs appealed
to the Eighth Circuit.
Feb. 28, 2017 - Eighth Circuit affirmed the district court decision
in favor of the defendants.
May 30, 2017 - Petition seeking Supreme Court review filed.
Nov. 13, 2017 - Petition granted.
Feb. 28, 2018 - Supreme Court oral argument.
June 14, 2018 - Supreme Court hands down its decision for the
plaintiffs.
