Law and Public Education

Course Description:

This course focuses on legal issues in public education. Topics will include student free speech rights both in school and on social media, the constitutionality of student dress codes, integration of the public schools, prayer in the schools, religious exemptions from mandatory immunizations, searches of student lockers and other personal belongings, and due process limits on student discipline.

Textbook:

I have prepared a textbook (coursepack) which is available at Shakespeare & Co. The reading material consists of introductory material for each subject followed by heavily edited versions of court opinions on the various subjects covered in the course. For students who have not previously read court opinions, a short description of the process is available: Reading A Judicial Opinion.

Questions About the Final Exam (2 questions and answers - last updated Dec. 12 at 8 a.m.)

Syllabus:

The syllabus contains a list of assignments, grading information, and other information about the course.

Getting to Know You Questionnaire:

I have prepared a “getting to know you” questionnaire I would like members of the class to fill out. It is an online form that is available at http://www.lharpaz.com/edulaw/questionnaire/form-page.html. Please fill it out as quickly as you can so I can read the responses before classes start or at least early in the semester.
